One of the biggest struggles for young people is getting on the property ladder. I've lost count of the amount of times I've imagined winning £1million on the lottery and buying a swanky pad on the river in London. Then I come around to the harsh reality of literally only being able to afford a 2 bedroom place in Croydon - and even that's gonna be a push!
I'm extremely lucky to live in such a comfortable, welcoming family home were our parents have encouraged us to travel and enjoy being young, spending money from our good jobs and drumming into us that we'll be paying a mortgage probably for the rest of our lives.
It's so hard to buy in London, especially as a young single 26 year old. I've lived away from home and had to come back so I've had a taste of independence. I had to just endure the frustration of moving back. I've begun to see the positive in going home though.
I've decided to take advantage of being at home, saving as much money as I can. I really don't want to rent. As much as it would be a quick solution to moving out, I'll just be throwing money away instead of investing it and if I'm lucky enough to still feel welcome and comfortable in our family home then for now I'm going to stay.
Before Christmas my shower leaked so I had to get a new bathroom. I also pushed to have my room re done so got new furniture, pictures and my TV put on the wall. I used Pinterest a lot to brainstorm ideas.
I've started becoming more aware of homeware departments in stores I always go in And if I can make my room and bathroom look like this I'm really inspired to do it to a whole house!
I've told myself that in 18 months I'll re evaluate and I'll definitely start to be more proactive in the next couple of years saving. I've only been thinking about the recently because I've got some advice on help to buy isas and am constantly around friends that have recently bought property. But I have to remember that I am single, have a career and want to travel. I have lived away from home for 5 years and I'm lucky we live so close to London. I have to be patient and focused on saving and right now that's just not where I'm at.
